Let’s be honest. Paying $4 for a coffee drink is ridiculous. Yes, I used to be able to validate the purchase on several levels. Not so any longer. However, I have found something even MORE ridiculous.

Since mid-September Starbucks has been continuing to charge $4 for a coffee drink but then offering at their POS (read: cash register) FREE copies of the GOOD sheet. Each week this fumbling duo has attempted to tackle one election topic, like carbon emissions, health care or education. I found especially ironic since my first free issue was on ‘The Economy.’ Yes, leave it to Starbucks to inform me of the national debt, unsecured credit lines, and the stock market collapse. All set inside a bio-degradable fold out wrapped in a GAP ad on one side and an American Apparel on the other.

“We had been looking at ways to bring a little bit of those conversation-starters into the Starbucks environment,” said Terry Davenport, the senior vice president for marketing at Starbucks to the NY Times. The iconic New York newspaper covered this unorthodox paradox of over-priced coffee and over chewed sound bytes via an online article
My favorite quote? “We thought, boy, if we could distribute some of those in the stores, it’s a quick way — without sitting down and reading a five-page article — a quick way to join the conversation,” Mr. Davenport said, adding that he envisioned stores holding discussion nights. Seems a bit like subliminal messaging to me. But who am I? Just the guy that paid $4 for a cup of coffee a few weeks back.

I just got the bi-weekly newsletter from Yelp this morning. I usually just delete them but today I took a read and I saw towards the bottom that I have been named a Top Yelper. How cool is that? For those who don’t know, Yelp is a social network of reviewers; services, businesses, forms of transportation – basically anything but specific people. I have written about 60 reviews now about places in Hampton Roads, Brooklyn, Surf City, San Fran, etc. and now I am getting a bit of notice. I haven’t yelped in a few weeks so now I guess the pressure is on. I better get back to writing some reviews. Hey, I wonder if I get any free stuff for this recognition?

I woke up today restless. Yesterday was spent indoors as it was both cold and rainy and I lacked almost all motivation. So yesterday I knew I needed to get up and get out. I intended to head to Obscura Antiques on East 10th Street to look at…well, obscure antiques. I got off the train at 77th street which mean I had about thirteen blocks total to walk in order to reach my destination. And what a 13 it was.

Somewhere around East 7th St between Second and Third Avenues I ran into the Ukrainian festival at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. It was only about a block long and looked more like a “get insurance from a Ukrainian broker” than any real heritage festival. But, it was interesting and something to add pizazz the day.

I made it to the antiques shop and was quite disappointed. Between their very small size and high prices, it was less than ideal to find some interesting pieces. I decided to continue walking around and checking out this new part of town. I ended up on Christopher Street and right smack in the middle of the Block & Merchants Association Festival. Trust me, nothing to write home about. It provided mild entertainment for a few minutes though.

As I realized the time and was already arranging some dinner plans with a dear friend I got held up on a corner – behind barricades, even – by the New York Dance Parade. Running on Broadway from 31st Street to 13th Street, then across town to 5th Avenue and south to Washington Square Park, the parade was just one troop after another of people who probably shouldn’t be wearing the costumes they were wearing, doing the movements they were doing or even considering calling it ‘dance’. It was the highlight of my day and left me sitting on the train home thinking to myself, “only in New York.”
