Inviting Guests to Your Poverty Party

This past week I read about how bargain shopping, hitting sales, buying off eBay and Craigslist, etc. have become all the rage for the “budget conscious” starlets of Hollywood. After reading the whole article I was literally sick to my stomach as debutantes were talking about their inability to pay for their Range Rovers and were having to put off a weekly mani/pedi in lieu of a bi-weekly. Again, I say, “What…What?”

I have not once said that I am poverty stricken. I am quite broke, yes. I need to reevaluate my spending, yes. But I am still blessed and have a roof over my head and food on my plate. So, in my opinion, as long as those things continue to exist I have room to give back which is exactly what I did today.

Just about noon Pan and I filled a couple of bags, grabbed two ill-fitting suits out of my closet and headed out. We first stopped at the drugstore where we purchased toothpaste, tooth brushes, deoderant, disposable razors, boxers, tighty whities, socks, and tshirts. Those last items were specifically requested on the site of New York City Rescue Mission

.  After filling my man bag with those items we hit the J train and headed into the city to drop off our goods. Now, this is nothing new to me. I have, for years, felt the conviction to give to others who may not has even as much as I do. So, in the spirit of the poverty party, did I have the money to do this? Well, no, not really. I could have put this money towards a bill or sold the suits online or something of that nature. But giving from the heart and giving when able is important and it makes me feel so much closer to my fellow new yorkers. Consider them my invited guests to my poverty party.
