I’m Stuck in Traffic, Mr. Spacely

Verdier
We’ve all seen a hippie bus. Some are true VWs while most are Westfalia. Between 1951 and August 1958 approximately 1000 Camper Box conversions were made by Westfalia the official Volkswagen Camper conversion coachbuilder. In August 1958 the SO models were introduced. SO is short for “Sonderausführung”, meaning Special Model. The typically came equipped with

  • Various Foldout seat arrangements for sleeping
  • Birch plywood interior panels
  • Laminated plywood cabinetry for storage
  • Ice box or cold-box
  • Sink (some models)
  • Water storage and pump
  • Electrical hookups
  • Curtains
  • Screened Jalousie Windows
  • Laminated folding table

Most were diesel though and had really ugly, rusty colored interiors. Some have survived and been adopted by tree-huggers world-wide to travel around in. Some have seen better days and live in automobile graveyards. But for some reason the human notion of going anywhere and just “setting up camp” has not been lost. We are a more complex society though and no matter how much we pare down we still seem to want Wi-Fi, GPS, comfortable beds, stoves, etc. Enter the Westfalia of 2008. Starting at a suggested $69k they are pretty amazing as you can see from the promotional and conceptual video on their page.
