Dissecting The Great Move
Well, a new chapter in life has begun. I now live in Brooklyn, New York. I certainly didn’t anticipate this step in my life and if you had asked me a year or so ago about it I would have more or less laughed at you. However, through professional and personal turns in life I now find myself sitting next the window of my apartment staring up at the J line as the train zips by. Just out front there is a middle-aged black man playing catch with two younger boys. Across the street sits a much older Asian man who seems to light one cigarette with another in a ridiculous chain-smoking frenzy. The smell of “street meat” seems to float down the sidewalk and the playground across the street is littered with children playing basketball and running after each other. It is quite interesting and comforting. There is life all around and although I have yet to be alone I find myself having more internal dialogue than I have in ages.
The move here was intense. We left Mississippi in a 17′ Uhaul and drove over to Georgia and up the coast. We stopped overnight twice to break the drive up and just try to relax while moving rather than fill ourselves with anxiety. In the next few days I am going to be dissecting the trip in terms of expenses, tips, thoughts, observations, etc as well as posting pictures taken along the way. I remember once trying to find information about moving to NYC and it was incredibly difficult so I am going to work extra hard trying to accurately offer advice to anyone planning to make the move. I have learned a lot, spent way too much money I didn’t have and learned to cut corners and improvise the entire way.
If you have ANY questions that you want me to specifically answer please write in the comment space and I will address them. I promise! Until then…..
