Life in the ’ssip

DWELL home

I have been asked several times when I am going to be leaving Mississippi. I am not quite sure. The delta has really taken a hold of me. It is hard to explain. There is nothing to do here really. There is a decent “greasy spoon” in the next town over and there is a post office and a little coffee shop. The countryside is nothing but cotton farms and weather is rather unpredictable. I spend most waking moments working and the rest of the time sitting on the porch just kind of…well, watching. I watch the fields. I watch the clouds roll by. I watch the rain pass over. I watch the dogs bark at imaginary prey. I watch the creek level rise and fall. Somehow it all appeals to me though. It is different than Georgia. I love Georgia. Don’t get me wrong. But it is different here. I am blocks (my term of measurement, I guess) away from the birthplace of Muddy Waters. In fact, every time I see an abandoned shack with a porch I kind of think of some older black man sitting on it with a ratty, slide guitar singing about whatever ales him that day. It is a nostalgia that is not my own but that I create to pass the time.

Mix this new affection with my love of sustainable architecture and eco-friendly structures and I think I could settle out here. Being able to work anywhere there is internet connection kind of solidifies my desire. I am connected at the fingertips to the rest of the world yet still get to live in a bit of subtlety; a feeling of self-appointed monasticism.

    Um…is that your house?
Cause we want one like it.

Nope. Not my house. It is actually just an image from the DWELL site. Still really awesome though. It is about 1300 square feet which is way more than I would ever need. I like more of 800 square or so.

I like the house. Even if it’s not yours. :)

Don’t stay in Mississippi. Your teeth will fall out. And your hair will naturally grow a mullet.
